I Really like it...But...

My mom (ain't she great?) found this really nice little sewing chair,  I' loved the lines of it, but the blond wood finish was just throwing something off for me.   It would look weird in my house.

Hmm...I thought I'd just sell it, BUT it doesn't break down (all glued together), so shipping it would be expensive as it would need a very large box.   Hmmmm again......I really hate stripping, staining, etc...- just not my cup-o-tea. So, I decided to paint it. Oh yeah, I hear the SCREAMS of

BTW: HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM!!!horror from the peanut gallery.  I want to use this next to my treadle cabinet in my living room, and I really want it to not compete for attention with the cabinet.  I lightly sanded the chair, and primed and painted it with spray paint.  the final finish is a soft eggshell black.  Of course, I recovered the seat too.

Before:

After- in it's new "home" next to the treadle cabinet:

BTW- HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM!

Love the chair. I would like to know more about your sewing machine. What type? How old? etc. Do you ever use a Featherweight?

      That's my Singer 201-3 from 1949. Yes, I've used a Featherweight.

aaah Jenny...I just love it and it set my mind to buzzin' just the way to marry my 30's kitchen table w/steel top to my much later era chairs!!! Thanks!!

I have that chair! It came with a sewing cabinet I picked up for my Kenmore. Unfortunately, it didn't fit. It won't fit the 403a, either. The universe must be trying to tell me I need another machine.

The chair isn't an exact match to the cabinet, but close enough. Actually, I wondered if the chair might have originally been for a musician because of the back detail. The under-seat storage could be for sheet music instead of sewing stuff.

Either way, it's a great little chair. Mine's in the basement waiting for me to find wheels for it.

You know, I used to have a little spinet piano that came with a chair just such as that one. Complete with storage under the seat.

I love your chair, but I love the old Singer cabinet even more and am currently in the hunt for one locally. Will a 15-91 fit in your cabinet? I'm looking for the 4 drawer model like my Mom's that I learned to sew on when I was 10...way back in 1950 lol. I'd like to put my newly acquired ($25) 15-91 in it and store the perfect bentwood case to keep it from damage. Thanks Jenny for all your wonderful information. Kath

The 15-91 will fit into a Singer treadle base, but there won't be any knee lever, and the 15-91 can't be easily converted to a treadle operated machine.

Hi Jenny, I read your posts on Treadle-on, Wefixit and Vintage Singers. This is the first time I have looked at your blog. Your chair is just exactly like the 4 I found on the curb up here in North Dakota last summer. Here is what I did with mine.

I agree with your idea to paint it too. However the black wouldn't go in my kitchen. I now have finished the three good chairs to match this one. I really liked the quilted seats.
    Keep up the good work,
    Nancy
