Another Vintage Sewing Booklet- Today's Woman Sewing Simplified

This booklet was published in 1965.  The cover sure looks like the mid sixties!  It actually reminds me of a TV show I like to watch (one of the few) called "Mad Men". I don't know exactly why, but something about that era just intrigues me.

Well, anyhow, this is an interesting publication.  It has some very helpful "Hot-To" guides and a 2 page "Dictionary of Sewing Terms" that I think are pretty good, especially for garment sewing.

However, This particular booklet has more than its fair share of funny and down right odd advertisements and photos.
The first one I noticed was the photograph accompanying the section on sewing equipment.  It seems that the intention of the photo is to illustrate an example of how to set up a sewing area. The spool rack on the wall is a great idea, and the hanging basket with balls of yarn- another great idea, but the actual sewing area- not so much.

Don't see the problem?? Really? Look again...at the sewing machine....umm...not all that easy to sew with it facing the wall!

I'm going to scan a few more pages- some funny, some useful and some simply interestiing-  as I find the time....stay tuned!

Nice set up. Isn't the machine backwards? Or did Singer actually make a left handed machine? I'm also a little interested in how the nice housewife retrieves thread from the top rows of that rack. And you have to LOVE the head holding the tape measures.

The Rocketeer can do anything, even sew by itself!

I also thought the machine was backwards. Fun picture!

I like the basket hanging on the wall with the yarn it... that's neat.

I agree with Beth BeeBee and Robin! Looks like that machine is backwards... must be a left handed sewing machine!

    Thanks for sharing... fun photo!

I think the photo was flipped and was not caught in editing. As I recall, The "Fawcett" booklets were not your top of the line books of the time.

Seriously, why hasn't there been a revival of EARLY AMERICAN? And pre-fab wood paneling -- we surely don't see enough of that anymore. I love the spinning wheel. Reminds me of a scene in Small Time Crooks. Tracey Ullman (new money) is asked about the harp in her living room. "Do you play the harp?" "No" she answers. "I just like the visual sweep!"

What I find most humourous about that photo is the sewing machine itself: it's turned *backwards* to the sewer!

Someone wasn't paying very close attention when they setup the shot -- and they probably didn't sew! LOL!
