I don't have any significant updates on my father's condition. He is in a coma, and he is still considered critical, but stable. The prognosis has not changed significantly.
Sammy (the cute pup in the photo) is my dad's little dog. Those two were really good buddies, and my dad has really been missing him. The plan was to take Sammy up to the rehab center for a visit this week.
A good friend of mine had been watching the dog up until labor day weekend, but Sammy is at my house now. I have three dogs of my own, and Sammy isn't trustworthy (yet) with the other dogs, so just to be one the safe side, I have been keeping him somewhat segregated. Over the years, I've fostered quite a few rescues, so I've played the "puppy shuffle" game in my house numerous times. I rotate who is in their crate, yard and house, and I try to take a dog or two for at least one walk per day. If I weren't spending so much time at the hospital and taking care of my father's household matters, I'd take all of the dogs for walks.
Oddly enough, Sammy has been VERY well behaved at my house. He's had quite the reputation for being a real nut ball, but not so much here. He's been especially good on walks. He just trots along nicely by my side.
With the correct environment and the right home, he will be a joy to have in the family for someone. He is very smart, playful and very loving. I will make sure that he has the best home possible. |
Just out of curiosity, are you sure the hospital won't let you 'sneak' Sammy in??
I know your dad is in a coma, but I believe he might sense it if the dog were on his bed and you put his hand on the dog. I don't even know if the dog is that well behaved. Just a shot in the dark. No, I am not a nut case.
I am a dog lover and an RN. I have some pretty funny, heart warming stories about situations similar to yours.
Continued good thoughts and prayers for you and your family.

You might want to see if there's a pet therapy group in the area. I've worked with one, and they're pretty good about being able to get animals "inside" to see their owners.
Worth a shot...
