The Dress...Prom 2009!

No way! It can’t be ? Time to start planning Prom ‘09

My youngest and only daughter is graduating from high school this year. I’m going to try like heck to not become a blubbering fool about the whole thing. You know the story, last year she was going to kindergarten, yadda, yadda, yadda…. I had no idea 12 years could fly by like that! Great…just great, now I’m starting to get all mushy…sigh….

OK, time to change the subject. Oh yeah, PROM! Last year, she went to her first prom, and of course, I made her dress. She didn’t want a full length dress. She wanted lime green and she wanted it simple. CAN DO!

Since I have this nasty habit of hording patterns that are on sale, I had quite the selection of patterns right in my personal stash. She looked over all the dresses, and right away selected a classic, halter dress with a bias cut skirt ( Mc Calls 3584, view A). It reminded me of Marilyn Monroe’s white dress in the movie “The Seven Year Itch”.

PhotobucketI made several muslins of the bodice before we got it just right. My daughter has a small ribcage and narrow back and is very petite, so several fit adjustments were necessary. Also, the pattern calls for pleats at the bust line which gave it a pointy boob look. Ummm…nope…can’t have that. So, I also changed this to soft gathers instead of pleats. The pattern also called for a centered zipper in the back. Yuck. I put in an invisible zipper instead.

Here is the dress, un-hemmed, on the dress form.

The fabric had to be special ordered from Joann’s, and it was a stretch satin. I found it pretty easy to work with (microtex needle). Of course, the lime green invisible zipper had to be special ordered as well. Total cost for fabric and the zipper was only about $30 - not bad for a prom dress! But, lovely daughter didn’t have the correct bra to wear with the dress. That sucker cost $40. Oh well, It was a convertible type that she has worn several times with other outfits. So, she is getting some mileage out of it.

Actually, her dress has gotten some use beyond prom too. Her friend borrowed it to wear to Homecoming this fall.

Here is the dress on lovely daughter

Remember me mentioning Marilyn Monroe? Well, as we were taking the obligatory pre prom photos, a gust of wind came and blew lovely daughter’s skirt up a bit, just like the famous Marilyn pose. I didn’t catch the actual skirt flying, but I did catch lovely daughter’s expression as it happened.

So, that was last year. Now it’s her senior prom in 2009 and she wants a full length dress. She’s started looking at patterns, but hasn’t settled on one yet.  So far, she is considering Butterick 5183,  Vogue 8449, Simplicity 4577 view A, and Simplicity 3503 view E/C , but I'm sure there will be others that will be considered.

Like every proud parent, I will keep you posted on our progress, and I’ll have plenty of photos of my “baby” to share!

Oh my gosh the Vogue dress is simply stunning in it's simplicity, tell her that's the one! She'll be a knockout, she's a beautiful girl!

You did a terrific job with the green dress, I'm sure whichever she chooses will be perfect!

If I get a vote (and I know I don't, LOL) I think the Vogue. Both the other are too much like what she did last year. But I'm sure she's not done with browsing.

LOL!  I don't get a vote either, and I'm making it!

She added another to her list today. Butterick 5183

The Great State of Florida casts its votes (exact number to be determined at recount) for the Vogue. It's so sleek, simple, and elegant that it could be worn for years, either long or shortened to cocktail length.

She looks great on that green dress. Very simple yet sassy. For the Senior Prom dress, i would love to see on the Simplicity 4577 view A, the short one.

Pretty dress! How can I turn one of my long prom dresses into a shorter dress with a balloon-like bottom?

Beautiful dress for last year's prom, and your daughter is indeed lovely. My vote is for either the Vogue or the Butterick, leaning strongly towards the Vogue. So classic. I'm sure whatever she chooses will look great, she knows what works for her.
